Montenegro's ruling party on Monday nominated President Milo Djukanovic as prime minister, said reports from Podgorica, the capital of the Montenegro Republic.

The main board of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) unanimously agreed that Djukanovic's talents would be put to best use as prime minister, the party said in a statement.

The DPS spokesman, Igor Lukssich, told reporters that Djukanovic would take up the prime ministerial post for the next four years and honor the DPS's commitment to the citizens during the election campaign.

Because of the prime minister nomination, Djukanovic, whose five-year presidential term expires at the end of this year, will not run for the next presidential election as a DPS candidate, Lukssich said.

Djukanovic, 40, became prime minister in 1991 and was elected president in 1997. Under the constitution, Djukanovic could run for another term as president. The presidential vote is set for Dec. 22 this year.

The DPS main board also nominated Prime Minister of the caretaker cabinet, Filip Vujanovic, to chair the newly-elected parliament, which is due to convene on Tuesday.

The pro-independence coalition, Democratic List for a European Montenegro, led by Djukanovic won 39 out of 75 parliamentary seatslast month, enabling the coalition to form a new government by itsown.

The coalition, made up by the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and two small parties, insists Montenegro should establish a loose federation with Serbiaand reserve the right to declare independence three years later.

Last March, the Montenegrin government signed a deal with Serbia on future relations between the two Yugoslav republics. Under the deal, Serbia and Montenegro would maintain a loose union, sharing one seat in the United Nations and implementing a common defense and foreign policy, but running most affairs separately.
