Mexican President Vicente Fox launched an ambitious anti-drugs plan on Monday with the aim of attaining a drug-free country by the year 2025.
"This is a war we will wage to its last consequences," said Foxduring the project's presentation. He also asked for cooperation from every sector of society in the fight against drug trafficking.
The so-called National Program for the Control of Drugs proposes coordinated actions between federal, state and municipal authorities and civil society to fight consumption, production andtrafficking of narcotics.
Authorities pledge to intensify actions to prevent and fight consumption of drugs, eradicate drug production and commercialization, and take steps to end drug-trafficking related crimes such as money laundering and gun-running.
The program will seek to intensify the exchange of information among different public institutions, promote international cooperation and create an adequate legal framework.
The plan's strategies are expected to allow anti-drug institutions "to produce results by year 2025."
Fox recounted advances made during his administration, which took office on Dec. 1, 2000, in combating drug-trafficking, and highlighted the arrest of 15,000 individuals, including 40 drug-lords, and the seizure of 2,500 tons of marijuana and 500 kg of heroin.
He added that rings headed by Arellano Felix (Tijuana), Carrillo Fuentes (Ciudad Juarez) and Osiel Cardenas (Golf of
Mexico
) have been almost dismantled.
