Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on Tuesday that Moscow welcomes Baghdad's readiness to cooperate with the United Nations on certain conditions on the basis of a new Security Council resolution.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Monday told visiting Austrianfar-right politician Joerg Haider that Iraq would cooperate with anew UN resolution if it "respects the UN charter, international law, and Iraq's sovereignty, security and independence, and does not provide a cover for the evil aims of the United States."

"This approach by the Iraqi leadership is to be welcomed," Yakovenko said.

"It is yet another evidence of Baghdad's readiness to cooperatewith the international community in order to clarify all issues concerning the banned Iraqi military programs," Yakovenko said.

He reiterated Russia's call for speedy return of international inspectors to Iraq.

"A prompt resumption of the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency inspections and monitoring should be ensured," Yakovenko said.

Yakovenko also expressed Russia's readiness to continue coordinating mutually acceptable text of a new UN resolution on Iraq if it is necessary for the international inspectors' return.

Yakovenko, however, insisted that the new U.N. Security Councilresolution on Iraq must be very clear, realistic and executable and devoid of any clauses that would pave the way for automatic use of force against Baghdad.
