Global Trade Fair on Construction, Engineering Equipment

An international trade fair showcasing the world's top construction and engineering equipment opened Tuesday in Shanghai.

An international trade fair showcasing the world's top construction and engineering equipment opened Tuesday in Shanghai.

The four-day event, known as BAUMA CHINA 2002, has been organized by Munich Trade Fairs Consultancy International and staged at the newly-built New Shanghai International Exhibition Center.

The Munich company is the organizer of BAUMA, the biggest tradefair of construction equipment in the world. BAUMA has been staged26 times in Munich since 1954.

A total of 423 leading construction and engineering equipment manufacturers from 29 countries, including Amman Asphalt GmbH, Deutche Grove GmbH, Herrenknecht AG, Hitachi and others from Italy,France, Spain, Finland and China, are represented at the show, which runs until Nov. 8.

Reinhold Festge, chairman of the advisory council for BAUMA, said China would become the largest market for engineering equipment and construction materials in Asia in the next 15 years,and they were willing to join in China's development.

Manfred Wutzlhofer, president of Munich Trade Fairs ConsultancyInternational, said his company was pleased to be involved in China's development process.

He said many major construction projects would be built in China in coming years, such as projects for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The fair will be held every two years in Shanghai.
