European-based manufacturer Unilever announced Monday the opening of a global purchasing center in this bustling east China metropolis of Shanghai.

Unilever chairman Niall FitzGerald said at the opening ceremony that Unilever's exports of raw materials from China would exceed 500 million US dollars in the next five years.

Having entered the Chinese market 16 years ago, FitzGerald said, Unilever now purchases in China more than 90 percent of the raw materials for making household use goods, cosmetics and health care products in China.

Establishing a global purchasing center in China should provide more opportunities for Chinese raw materials providers to compete in the international market, the chairman said, adding the move will benefit the development of Unilever China and Unilever's global businesses, as well as Shanghai, a leading foreign trade center of China.

At present, Unilever have more than 200 Chinese suppliers, making China one of the leading raw materials bases for Unilever.

FitzGerald said Unilever would develop its businesses in China on a long-term basis, noting China's resources and productive forces would be a strong driving force for Unilever's future development and growth.

Unilever has invested 1 billion US dollars in China so far, and now produces more than 20 brand-name products in the country.
