Republicans were poised to keep control of the US House of Representatives in the midterm election on Tuesday, dashing hopes of Democrats to regain control of the House after losing it eight years ago.

As of 1100 p.m. Eastern Time (0400 GMT Wednesday), Republicans led Democrats by 167 to 139, US television networks projected. A minimum number of 218 seats are needed for majority in the 435-seat House.

Currently, the House has 223 Republicans, 208 Democrats, one independent and three vacancies in seats formerly held by Democrats. While only a few dozens of races are considered toss-ups, Republicans won or were leading in many of them, including those in Kentucky, New Hampshire and West Virginia.
