The Jakarta administration is deploying some 4,800 police officers to enforce a decree on the closure of entertainment centers during the fasting month when the annual Muslim festival Ramadan began across this country on Wednesday.

The officers, including 4,000 public order officers and dozens of police and military officers, were sworn in during a ceremony held at the National Monument park in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, according to the daily Jakarta Post Wednesday.

"We call on people to report any violations of the decree. But do not take the law into your own hands," Fauzi Bowo, vice governor of Jakarta, said following the ceremony.

The gubernatorial decree, which was issued two weeks ago, prohibits some entertainment centers, including discotheques, massage parlors, saunas and nightclubs during the fasting month.

However, other kinds of entertainment centers, such as bars, singing halls and live music halls are permitted to do business between 8:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. during the month.

However, under the decree, none of the facilities are allowed to open on the first day of Ramadan.

According to the Entertainment Center Owners Association here, Jakarta has some 2,887 licensed entertainment centers, 251 cinemas,200 billiard halls and 1,228 bars and restaurants. Some 250,000 people work at these centers, which contribute some 40 billion rupiah (some 4.4 million US dollars) in taxes to Jakarta's revenueeach month.
