US Republican Party has taken control of Senate after Republican Jim Talent defeated Democratic incumbent Senator Jean Carhahan in Missouri and winning the party's 50th seat in Tuesday's midterm elections.

The Republican Party was ensured control of the chamber next year because Vice President Dick Cheney will cast tie-breaking votes.

The Republican Party, holding the White House, has also retained its majority in the House of Representatives.

Before the elections, the Democratic party had a one-seat margin after Vermont Senator James Jeffords abandoned the Republican Party in June 2001.

The Democratic Party has the control of at least 47 Senate seats, with the results of some races still unknown.
