Jiang entertains world media leaders
President Jiang held a banquet Wednesday evening to entertain global media leaders participating in the seventh annual meeting of the International Council of the Museum of Television and Radio (MT&R).

In a speech delivered at the banquet, Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing voiced his appreciation for the MT&R International Council's efforts to promote world media exchanges and cooperation.

He said China's entry into the World Trade Organization and its further reform and opening-up require better communication between China and the rest of the world.

The media play an essential role in enhancing understanding and removing misconceptions and prejudice, said Li.

He said China is pushing forward reforms of its media sector and needs to learn from overseas experiences, hoping that the meeting will lay a sound foundation for future cooperation.

Participants expressed their willingness to further exchanges and cooperation with Chinese media.

The MT&R, the largest and most prestigious institution of its kind in the world, was set up in 1975 to acquire, preserve, exhibit and interpret television and radio programs for public access.

The International Council of the MT&R, which was founded in 1995, has held its previous annual meetings in Rome, Berlin, Madrid, Paris, London and Vienna.
