Some 1,500 people gathered on Saturday in the eastern German city of Weimar to protest against right-wing extremism and xenophobia.
They protested against a demonstration of the ultra-right National Democratic Party of
Germany
(NPD) held the same day in the city, in which some 150 right-wing extremists took part.
The NPD demonstration was banned by the city administration, but the ban was lifted later by the Administrative Court. Following the lifting of the ban, a demonstration under the slogan"Weimar residents against right-wring extremism" was planned.
To avoid conflicts between the two sides, the two demonstrations were arranged by authorities to be held in different places in the city.
Police said there were no conflicts between the two groups.
