Qingdao University of Oceanology Renamed

Qingdao University of Oceanology has been renamed the China University of Oceanology as part of its effort to become globally influential in its field, according to a spokesperson for the university.

Qingdao University of Oceanology has been renamed the China University of Oceanology as part of its effort to become globally influential in its field, according to a spokesperson for the university.

Located in the famous coastal city of Qingdao in Shandong province, east China, the university was set up in 1924 as a private institution of higher learning and has become quite prestigious in China.

The university now boasts 15,000 students, and the figure is expected to increase by 1,500 by 2005.

More than 90 percent of China's researchers with doctorate degrees in oceanology and aquaculture were trained by the university.
