British athlete Simon Lessing became the champion of the men's group at the 2002 Sanya International Triathlon held on Hainan Island in south China on Saturday.

Lessing, a five-time world champion, trailed Chinese athlete LuChundi a little in the first event of 1.8km swimming, but led the whole group in the following 59km cycling race and 12km race, and finished the first in nearly four hours.

Canadians Peter Reid and Luke Mckenzie took the silver and bronze respectively, while Chinese Lu came the sixth, which was the best result for Chinese competitors.

In the women's competition, Australian Rebekah Keat, 24, clinched the title, followed by Belinda Granger and Katja Schumacher.

Trailing many opponents in the swimming and the cycling race, Keat stormed to first place in the 12km race, which is her strong event.

Since the triathlon entered the Olympic Games in 2000, the strength of the Chinese athletes in the sport has been improving. It has also become an official event in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
