Public Broadcasters Should Set High Standard: HK Official

Public broadcasters should act as role models for the media industry, said Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology Henry Tang Monday.

Public broadcasters should act as role models for the media industry, said Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology Henry Tang Monday.

Tang made the opening remarks at the two-day Public Broadcasters International (PBI) Annual Conference.

"I fully support the idea that public broadcasters should perform the important benchmarking function for the media. They are the role models for responsible and accountable players in the media industry, adhering to the highest ethical, professional and programming standards.

"The public expects nothing less from our public broadcasters, and rightly so," he said.

Tang also told the top foreign public broadcaster professionals that the freedom of speech in the Hong Kong media has remained unchanged in the past five years.

"(This is) because our belief in basic freedoms and the rule of law, which are enshrined in our Basic Law," he said.

At the conference's dinner reception Monday evening, Hong Kong Director of Broadcasting Chu Pui Hing said that the annual public broadcasting conferences always impart a sense of purpose and good spirits amongst public broadcasters.

The conference is an annual event, where public broadcasting executives from all corners of the world gather to disseminate information, debate and seek innovative and effective solutions to critical issues affecting public broadcasters.

This year, participants are from places such as the Chinese mainland, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Ghana, Rwanda, South Korea, Mozambique, Jamaica, Afghanistan and Indonesia.

Currently, the membership of the PBI includes internationally renowned organizations such as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, ARD Germany, BBC, CBC, Czech Television, Danish Radio, EBS Seoul, Egypt TV, France TV, Israel Broadcasting Authority, Macao TV and NHK.
