The Swedish Foreign Ministry announced in Stockholm on Monday that Sweden has expelled two Russian diplomats suspected of involvement in economic espionage against telecom giant Ericsson.

The two Russian diplomats were regarded as persona non grata due to activities in Sweden inappropriate to their positions, the foreign ministry said.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry had informed the Russian embassy in Stockholm of the expulsion and the two Russian diplomats had left the northern European nation.

According to local reports, the two Russians had attempted to steal secret documents from Ericsson, a Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer. In an investigation into the scandal, three Ericsson employees suspected of passing the secret documents to the Russians were detained last week.

Ericsson said another two company employees involved in the case were suspended from their posts.

Ericsson, one of the world's biggest producer of mobile phone networks, also develops military telecom equipment including radar and missile guidance systems.
