A fifty-four-year-old American lecturer who allegedly tried to overrun a security roadblock in Mutare in the east of the country on Monday was shot and died three hours later at a hospital in the city, state radio reported Tuesday.

Security forces on Monday night confirmed the incident, which occurred at the Prince of Wales View along the Mutare-Vumba Road at about 5 p.m. (local time) on Monday.

The security forces would not give his name, as his next of kin had not yet been informed.

Information on the man's passport gave his nationality as American. He had a temporary South African residence permit set to expire next January.

According to the police, the man arrived at the roadblock driving a Toyota Corolla with South African registration numbers.

They stopped his vehicle and asked for his documents. A look at the documents revealed that a temporary import permit for the vehicle, which he was driving, had expired on October 28 this year.

He allegedly became uncooperative when quizzed over the expired document and wound-up his window.

He then allegedly drove off at high speed prompting some officers who had positioned themselves in front of his vehicle to dive out of his way.

It was then that an officer who was part of a stop group fired at the vehicle hitting his left rear wheel and when the vehicle did not stop, they fired another shot which went through his rear number plate.

Police suspected that it was this bullet which ricocheted and hit the man on the left side of the shoulder.

He managed to stop the vehicle before it left the road. Police then called an ambulance, which took him to Seventh Avenue Surgical Unit.

He however, died around 8 p.m. under police guard. Investigations were still in progress.
