China's cities have greatly improved their search and rescue capacities during natural disasters or emergencies, experts say.

The appraisal came from an annual meeting of International Search and Rescue Advisory Group of the United Nations, which opened here Tuesday to discuss search and rescue in the Asia-Pacific region.

China had been seriously plagued by natural disasters, according to experts at the meeting, but the country was paying greater attention to disaster prevention, especially earthquake prevention, as well as search and rescue work.

China's efforts in improving search and rescue capacities included setting up a Chinese International Search and Rescue Teamlast November, said Liu Yuchen, vice-director of China's State Seismological Bureau.

The meeting attracted over 120 representatives from the United Nations, Europe, Americas and Asia-Pacific areas.
