New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said in Auckland on Wednesday that New Zealand has every reason to welcome the increased prosperity of Chinese people and would build on the current excellent relationship with China to ensure that New Zealand shares in China's future.

Clark made the remarks at a seminar hosted by the Asia Institute of Auckland University commemorating the 30th anniversary of Sino-New Zealand diplomatic ties.

She noted that remarkable changes have taken place in China since the policy of reform and opening up was adopted in 1978. "The standards of living of many of its people have improved immeasurably" and "many people are traveling and studying all over the world, including New Zealand."

China's successful hosting of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation), together with its accession to the World Trade Organization, and the decision of the International Olympic Committee that it should host the 2008 Olympic Games, made 2001 a landmark year for its international standing and relationships, she said. She added that" China is becoming a wealthier, more open and self-assured society and a more significant voice in world affairs."

She hailed the successful interaction between the two countries in the areas of politics, trade, tourism, education, science and international security, as a result of an ever-expanding friendly cooperation.

China is now New Zealand's fourth largest trading partner overall and fastest growing tourism market with 20,000 Chinese students in New Zealand and 65,000 China visitors coming to New Zealand each year, she said, calling on New Zealand to maximize its potential for trade and other exchanges with China.

On the Taiwan issue, the prime minister said New Zealand governments have honored the "One China" policy since the establishment of diplomatic ties and her government will continue to do so.
