China's CPI Drops in October

China's consumer price index (CPI) dropped 0.8 percent in October over a year ago, official figures show. Figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Wednesday showed that the CPI fell 0.9 percent year-on-year in urban areas and 0.4 percent in rural areas of China in October.

China's consumer price index (CPI) dropped 0.8 percent in October over a year ago, official figures show. Figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Wednesday showed that the CPI fell 0.9 percent year-on-year in urban areas and 0.4 percent in rural areas of China in October.

Though the October CPI climbed 0.2 percent over the previous month, the overall CPI for the first 10 months of the year was 0.8percent lower than in the same period last year, the NBS said.

Among the 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions surveyed by the NBS, 24 saw a declining CPI while the remaining seven recorded price hikes in October.

The prices of consumer goods nationwide dropped 1.5 percent year-on-year in October, according to the NBS. Prices for services rose 1.6 percent, foodstuffs dipped 0.5 percent and non-food products dropped 0.9 percent.

The prices of foodstuffs, clothing, medical services, personal necessities, transport and telecommunications all dropped in October, while entertainment and educational goods and services saw higher prices, the NBS said. Meanwhile, housing prices remained unchanged compared with a year ago.
