Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Assistant Foreign Minister Zhou Wenzhong held talks Wednesday with US Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan told a Beijing press conference Thursday.

The officials from both countries agreed to resolutely implement the consensus reached by Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President George W. Bush during their recent meeting at Bush's Texas ranch. The two sides will expand consultation and cooperation over a wide area and on such international and regional issues as counter-terrorism, economics and trade, and properly handle disputes to advance constructive and cooperative Sino-US ties, Kong said.

Kong said the two sides also discussed the nuclear issue in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The US officials reported progress on this issue and China stated its principled position, he said.

He noted that China supports the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and maintenance of peace and stability there, and that it hopes the framework agreement on the nuclear issue could be implemented and the matter settled peacefully.

Both countries agreed to keep in contact in this regard, Kong said.
