Two US Soldiers Killed in Combat Training Exercise

Two US soldiers were killed in a military base in Louisiana on Thursday, apparently run over by atank during a combat training exercise, military officials said.

Two US soldiers were killed in a military base in Louisiana on Thursday, apparently run over by atank during a combat training exercise, military officials said.

The soldiers were training at the Army's Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk when the incident happened, Fort Polkspokesman Ron Elliott was quoted by local media reports as saying.

The soldiers, with a brigade of the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, were evacuated to a nearby hospital after the 5:30 a.m. (11:30 GMT) accident and pronounced dead soon afterward, Elliott said. They were not immediately identified.

A team from the US Army Safety Center was due to arrive by the end of the day.

The 101st Airborne is an air assault division trained to deployrapidly anywhere in the world. About 4,000 soldiers from the division served in Afghanistan until August.
