East China Province Invests Heavily in Environmental Protection

The eastern province of Anhui has announced plans to pour 20 billion yuan (2.4 billion US dollars) into environmental improvement and protection over the next several years.

The eastern province of Anhui has announced plans to pour 20 billion yuan (2.4 billion US dollars) into environmental improvement and protection over the next several years.

According to the municipal environmental protection bureau, the funds will be spent on improving water quality in local rivers and lakes and improving air quality in urban areas.

The plan also calls for the establishment of five special ecological protection zones and 69 new nature reserves.

The province currently has 31 nature reserves, covering a total area of more than 571,000 hectares of which five are state-level nature protection zones.
