Guangzhou Port, the biggest in south China, is expected to handle a record 150 million tons of goods this year, a year-on-year increase of about 10 percent, the Guangzhou Port Authority announced Friday.

According to the port authority, the figure has doubled since five years ago, with an annual average growth rate of 14 percent.

The authority said figures from the Ministry of Communications show the port became one of the 10 largest ports in the world in terms of goods handled last year.

Located in the Pearl River Delta area, one of the most prosperous areas in China, the port has links with about 300 ports in over 80 countries in the world and about 100 ports in other parts of China. Huang Guosheng, head of the Guangzhou Port Authority, said they have planned 5 billion yuan (609 million US dollars) for modernization projects in the coming few years.

The port plans to raise its container-handling capacity to 2.1 million units this year, and 6 million in 2005.

Shanghai Port, in the Yangtze River Delta in east China, is expected to handle 250 million tons of goods this year, approaching the figure for the Port of Singapore, the second largest in the world.
