When a girl student in grade two of Guangzhou No. 3 Middle School became so obsessed with her unrequited puppy love that she failed her exams, a psychological counselor came to her rescue and talked her out of her problem.

The student's experience has been shared by many more of her peers who have problems dealing with mental obstacles as more and more primary and middle schools in Guangdong Province, south China, have introduced psychological counselors.

Besides having a comfortable consulting room, Xianliedong Primary School has invited professionals from the Psychological Department of Beijing Normal University to join the counseling team.

In Guangzhou No. 3 Middle School, the counselors have held more than 500 consultations since the service was established two years ago, including many with parents.

Mental health education has been listed as a must for schools by the Ministry of Education and, at the end of September this year, the ministry asked all primary and middle schools across the country to establish psychological consulting rooms.
