Officials Applaud Success of Shanghai Masters Cup

Top tennis officials applauded the success of the year-ending Tennis Masters Cup, which is held on Nov. 12-17 in Shanghai, saying it's second to none in every aspect.

Top tennis officials applauded the success of the year-ending Tennis Masters Cup, which is held on Nov. 12-17 in Shanghai, saying it's second to none in every aspect.

"In review of the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai 2002, I'm sure I can speak for all the tennis family in saying that we consider this event a fantastic success, organized in every way, second to none," Mark Miles, CEO of Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), told the news conference here Saturday.

This is the third Tennis Masters Cup with two highly successfultournaments having been staged in Lisbon in 2000 and Sydney in 2001.

"It has established a special opportunity for the future (of tennis) in China, " he added.

Along with Miles, Francesco Ricci Bitti, President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), is also in Shanghai attending the grand gathering in world's tennis.

On behalf of the ITF, Bitti extended his congratulations on the"outstanding and successful organization of the 2002 Tennis Masters Cup".

"We started working with China in 1998 and we've seen a lot of achievements." Bitti said.

He also believed Shanghai deserved the International Expo 2010,which Shanghai is bidding to host.

Three Chairmen of the four Grand Slams who were present at the media interview room also didn't restrain from extending their compliments to the Shanghai Masters Cup.

While Merv Heller, Chairman of US Open, believed Shanghai couldget 95 out of 100 points for successfully hosting the year-ending tournament, Wimbledon's Chairman Tim Phillips gave Shanghai 11 outof 10.

"It's second to none," said Geoff Pollard, Chairman of Australian Open.

The Tennis Masters Cup, jointly staged by the three governing bodies in men's tennis-the ATP, Grand Slams and ITF, is the culminating event of the men's professional tennis circuit, where the world's best eight players for the year meet in a final play-off as well as a last chance for the players to earn enough pointsto be crowned World No. 1.
