Chinese PLA to Try out Winter Draft Psycho Tests

The Chinese PLA (People's Liberation Army) is lately reported going to try out psycho tests in ten of its winter drafting centers across China. What tests of these are to be carried out? And in what ways are these call-up tests to be conducted?

It is learned that by psycho tests are meant to get to know the intellectual ability and personality of new recruits to be enlisted. Psychoanalyses would be made in the way their arithmetic and language ability, information processing speed and mental stability are told to prevent those suffering from mental defects and abnormality of personality at enlistment age not to be recruited.

Intellectual tests are to include the conscripts' abilities for doing additions or reduction, requiring satisfactory response to a set of additions or reductions with 15 seconds.

Personality tests require answers to 195 examination questions such as "I often feel very happy", "I never tell a lie", "Do you often read engineering books?" and "Are you on good terms with your brother or sister?"

Dr. Luo Zhenggang with the Aviation and Space Teaching and Research Section affiliated with the 4th Army Medical University of the PLA told Guangzhou Evening News about his organization work of the tests. The tests are mainly stressing on a checkup on the recruits' understanding ability, their reaction speed, mental stability and the ability for unity and cooperation, he said.

Luo pointed out that mental incidences have been on the rise in China and these have to some extent affected the quality of recruits enlisted. The Chinese PLA has with its modernization drive for building up a powerful army through developing science and technology put a high demand on new army recruits for their psychological bearing ability and psycho caliber. But as things stand with China's current army recruitment scheme, it can hardly prevent enlistment-age recruits suffering from mental disease or psychological defects not to be enlisted into the army. It is therefore necessary for the Ministry of Defense and the PLA Department of General Mobilization to choose ten conscription areas and cities to pilot psychological tests on new recruits in its winter draft work.

Lu tells that the tests may borrow on some known foreign methods and techniques along with those that have been used in drafting tests for recruiting PLA pilots.

Beijing (Fengtai District), Xi'an City (Xincheng, Shaanxi), Changsha City (Yueluo District, Hunan Province), Xinghe County and Kunming City (Panlong District, Inner Mongolia Region), Zhongshan City (Guangdong Province), Jingjiang City (Jiangsu Province), Yanshi City (Henan Province), Wuzhong City (Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region), and Lanxi County (Heilongjiang Province) are reported going to conduct winter draft psycho tests by the PLA..

As being first to be tried out, the tests would not be used as criteria but merely as factors for reference in PLA's winter enlistment work expected.
