China is satisfied with the steady progress in ties with Ukraine, and Ukrainian President Leonid Danilovich Kuchma's current visit to China will further strengthen the two nations' overall relationship of friendship and cooperation, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Monday.

Jiang made the remarks Monday evening while holding talks with Kuchma. The two leaders exchanged views on bilateral ties and other regional and international issues of common concern, and reached a consensus on a broad range of issues.

Jiang had high praise for bilateral relations, saying that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 10 years ago, the two countries have demonstrated mutual respect, coordination and support in international affairs. The two countries have intensified overall cooperation based on the principles of equality and mutual benefit. Regional and people-to-people contacts have been increasing.

Last year, the two sides established an overall friendly and cooperative relationship which stresses long-term stability, high-level trust and mutual coordination, ushering their relations into a new phase, Jiang said.

The Chinese side is satisfied with the steady development of bilateral ties, he said.

Jiang said China attaches importance to the advancement of relations with Ukraine and is willing to work with the Ukrainian side to enhance their mutually beneficial cooperation, encourage direct links between their enterprises, promote their economic and technological cooperation and mutual investment, and strengthen their cooperation in the fields of high technology, education, culture, tourism and press, along with personnel exchanges.

The overall advancement of bilateral ties serves the fundamental interests of both countries and both peoples, Jiang said. China appreciates Ukraine's understanding and support for China on issues like Taiwan and human rights. China will continue to support Ukraine's efforts in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and understand and respect Ukraine's choice of the road of development.

China will also respect and understand Ukraine's domestic and foreign policy decisions which are made in accordance with its own national situation, and will continue to provide aid within its ability.

Kuchma congratulated Jiang on the success of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and expressed admiration for China's achievements in its modern drive over the past 13 years. He also had high praise for the important thought of "Three Represents."

Kuchma thanked China for its sincere aid and support for Ukraine and expressed satisfaction with the advancement of the two nations' friendly and cooperative relations on the basis of mutualtrust and support.

Ukraine is willing to conduct substantial cooperation with China in human resources, technology, aviation and space, education and culture, so as to create an even better future for bilateral ties.
