Turkey Forms New Cabinet

Abdullah Gul, Turkish Prime Minister-designate and Deputy Chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), on Monday afternoon formed the 58th Turkish government.

Abdullah Gul, Turkish Prime Minister-designate and Deputy Chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), on Monday afternoon formed the 58th Turkish government.

According to the list of the new cabinet Gul unveiled, there areseven state ministers, among them three are also deputy prime ministers.

Meanwhile, Yasar Yakis, a veteran career diplomat with expertiseon Arab countries, and Vecdi Gonul, a former regional governor, were named as foreign minister and defence minister.

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer has approved the 25-member cabinet,down from 38 under former veteran Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit.

However, the new government, the first single party government in 15 years in the country, is expected to soon face a confidence vote in parliament.

The AKP, a party with Islamist roots, won 363 out of 550 parliamentary seats in the general election early this month. Its chiarman Erdogan, however, is barred from becoming prime minister due to a 1998 conviction for sedition.

Gul, the prime minister-designate has vowed that his government would waste no time in addressing the country's urgent problems, including a major economic crisis.
