Chinese Defense Minister Meets Ukrainian President
Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met with visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in Beijing Monday.

met with visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in
Beijing
Monday.
Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China and a state councilor, warmly welcomed Kuchma to China at the invitation of Chinese President
Jiang Zemin
. It was an important event in the history of bilateralrelations and would promote the development of friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries and their armed forces,he said.
As a big country in Europe,
Ukraine
played a constructive role in international affairs, he said, adding that the two countries enjoyed a traditional friendship and shared a common stance on a series of major international issues.
The Chinese armed forces valued the steady development of long-term, friendly and cooperative ties with their Ukrainian counterparts, which was not only in the fundamental interests of the two peoples but also conducive to world peace and stability, he said.
Chi also summarized the just-concluded 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
Kuchma said the purpose of his visit was to upgrade Ukrainian-Chinese relations through discussions with President Jiang Zemin, and expressed his hope that exchanges and cooperation between the two armed forces would be further strengthened.

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met with visiting Ukrainian Minister of Defense Vladimir Shkidchenko in Beijing on Monday.
Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China and a state councilor, said with their traditional friendship China and Ukraine had cooperated fruitfully in political, economic, cultural, scientific and technological fields since the two countries established diplomatic ties a decade ago.
Chi said China valued the relationship between the armed forcesof both countries which was an important part of bilateral ties. China's armed forces were ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with their Ukrainian counterparts in the new century.
Chi also voiced appreciation for the Ukrainian government's adherence to the "one-China" principle.
Shkidchenko said military exchanges and cooperation had progressed smoothly and exchanges on military education had playeda significant role in building the two armed forces.
The Ukrainian armed forces were keen to further cooperation andexchanges with their Chinese counterparts in the future, he said.
The two sides also discussed views on international and regional issues of common concern.
