Chinese, Ukrainian Presidents Sign Joint Declaration

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Danilovich Kuchma signed a joint declaration in Beijing on Monday, promising to strengthen bilateral ties between China and Ukraine.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Danilovich Kuchma signed a joint declaration in Beijing on Monday, promising to strengthen bilateral ties between China and Ukraine.

President Kuchma who arrived Sunday on a four-day state visit to China at Jiang's invitation, is the first foreign head of state Jiang has met since the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The joint declaration says that President Jiang and his Ukrainian counterpart Kuchma agreed to widen bilateral cooperation in politics, economics and culture as well as expand the legal basis for developing bilateral ties during the talks they held on Monday.

The document says China-Ukraine ties have grown rapidly and had remarkable success on the basis of long-term stability and mutual support since the two countries established their diplomatic relations 10 years ago.

The two presidents reiterated that China and Ukraine would foster an all-round friendly and cooperative partnership featuring long-term stability and high-level trust and coordination, which would be in the fundamental interests of both peoples and of strategic significance to the two countries.

The Chinese side reiterated its adherence to its consistent stance of supporting the sovereign and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Ukraine reiterated that there was only one China in the world, and the government of the People's Republic of China was the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan was an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

Both sides note with satisfaction the drastic rise in bilateral trade and increasingly active bilateral cooperation affecting the economy, industry, investment, science, technology and education, according to the joint declaration.

China pledges again to provide active support to Ukraine in its bid to join the World Trade Organization, says the document, adding the two sides will hold a "China Culture Day" in Ukraine next year.

Both countries agree to encourage the new model high-tech cooperative parks and joint research institutes and implement the agreement on aeronautic technology cooperation.

The presidents pointed out both countries share identical or similar views on resolving international and regional issues, says the joint declaration.

The two sides stressed the need for close and effective international cooperation in combating various forms of terrorism, holding that the international community should coordinate and boost its international counter-terrorism cooperation, in which the United Nations should play the leading role.

Stressing the need to improve the working efficiency of the U.N.plus broaden its functions, the two presidents pledged to strengthen cooperation within the framework of the U.N. and other international organizations.

President Jiang accepted President Kuchma's invitation to visit Ukraine, says the joint communique, adding that the date for the visit will be consulted and decided through diplomatic channels.
