Manzhouli -- China's Top Inland Port of Entry

The city of Manzhouli in Inner Mongolia is still China's top inland port of entry in terms of imports and exports, trade volume and the amount of tax paid to the state, a position it has held in recent years.

The city on the Sino-Russian border had handled 8.2 million tons of imports and exports, generated trade worth 882 million US dollars and paid 1.3 billion yuan in taxes to the state in January-September period of this year, ranking first among China's ports of entry, said Wang Zhiguang, director of the Manzhouli City Bureau for Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Manzhouli is on the most convenient route to the Commonwealth of Independent States. The city's trade makes up 36.9 percent of total foreign trade in Inner Mongolia and 13 percent of China's total trade with its 15 neighboring countries.

The local government has adopted a series of policies to boost border trade and opened 176 import and export companies since the city was designated as an international port of entry city in 1992.

The city's focus has shifted from barter to cash transactions, and goods traded have changed from waste steel, chemical fertilizers, fruit, vegetables and garments in the previous years to timber, petroleum and technology.

Statistics show Manzhouli has handled 40 million tons of goods over the past 10 years, with foreign trade worth 5.1 billion US dollars, topping all the ports of entry in the country.
