China's top legislator Li Peng met with visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Danilovich Kuchma in Beijing on Tuesday, urging broader China-Ukraine ties including contact between the legislatures of the two countries.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top law-making body, praised the healthy and sustained growth of ties and cooperation since China and Ukraine established diplomatic relations 10 years ago.

Kuchma's talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Monday had proved fruitful, revitalizing the friendly cooperative partnership between the two countries, Li said.

The friendly contact between the NPC and the Supreme Council ofUkraine, in particular, were an integral part of the ties between China and Ukraine at large, Li said. He emphasized that such contacts and exchanges of visits by leaders of both legislatures would play a unique and vital role in boosting state-to-state relations.

Li also briefed Kuchma on the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), noting that the congress set strategic objectives for the country's development.

Kuchma, who arrived Sunday on a four-day state visit as President Jiang's guest, said his current talks and meetings with Chinese leaders had deepened the mutual understanding and friendship between Ukraine and China.

Extending thanks to China for its support and help on international issues as well as in Ukraine's economic development, the president said his country would continue to keep to the "one-China" policy.

The Supreme Council of Ukraine was keen to boost contacts and cooperation with the NPC, in a bid to lift relations between Ukraine and China, Kuchma added.

He pointed out that the 16th CPC National Congress had yielded great achievements, which would exert a vital impact on the long-term development of China.

China has achieved long-term political stability and sustained economic growth and had made major contributions to world peace, from which many countries like Ukraine could learn, said the president.

Ukraine would continue its efforts to improve cooperation with China, to lift bilateral ties to a higher level, Kuchma added.
