Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met visiting Ukrainian President Leonid Danilovich Kuchma in Beijing on Tuesday.

Recalling his visit to Ukraine in May this year, Li told the president he was very impressed by Ukraine's abundant natural resources, great development potential and the sincere friendship between the Ukrainian and Chinese people.

Li said China would forever remember those Ukrainian technical experts who came all the way here in the early years after the founding of new China, noting they contributed their wisdom and strength for the country's well-being.

Bilateral ties had developed very smoothly since the two countries established diplomatic relations, Li said, stressing that the prospects for economic cooperation between the two were bright.

He believed that Kuchma's current visit would boost the development of friendly relations.

Extending congratulations on the successful 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Kuchma said Ukraine valued China's role in the international arena and was willing to develop all-round friendly cooperative ties with China.

Ukraine hoped to work with China to explore more avenues for cooperation, and promote trade and economic cooperation, to improve mutual understanding and friendship, he said.

Kuchma is here for a four-day state visit at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin. The two presidents held talks and signed a joint declaration on Monday, reaching broad consensus on cooperation between both countries.
