Premier Zhu Meets Int'l Advisers for HK Chief Executive

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Tuesday met with the members of the Hong Kong Chief Executive's Council of International Advisers (CECIA) and had cordial and friendly talks with them.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Tuesday met with the members of the Hong Kong Chief Executive's Council of International Advisers (CECIA) and had cordial and friendly talks with them.

During the meeting, Zhu said it is a great pleasure for him to meet with these advisers in Hong Kong. "It is a very good thing that Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa invited you to give counsels asHong Kong is now facing some economic difficulties," he said.

The Premier said that the principle of "One Country, Two systems" provides Hong Kong with a strong guarantee and good mechanism for prosperity and stability. While in "One Country," Hong Kong enjoys a powerful backing and broad hinterland of China's mainland, under the "Two Systems," Hong Kong can give full play to its own advantages and vitality, he explained.

Zhu encouraged the international advisers to offer their adviceon strategic issues concerning the long-term development of Hong Kong.

The non-official international advisers who attended the meeting were Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG Karl-Hermann Baumann, Chairman of Lloyds TSB Maarten van den Bergh, Chairman and CEO of American International Group Maurice R Greenberg, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of DaimlerChrysler AGHilmar Kopper, CEO of AOL Time Warner Inc. Gerald M Levin and Senior Adviser to the President of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Tasuku Takagaki.

Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and other senior Hong Kong government officials were also present at the meeting.

Established in 1998, the CECIA consists of 19 non-official members, all of whom are prominent international business and corporate leaders. The council advises the Chief Executive from aninternational perspective on strategic issues pertinent to the long-term development of Hong Kong.
