Two papyrus documents and coins with the Hebrew name of Shimon were uncovered recently in a cave near the Dead Sea, Israel Radio reported on Tuesday.

The cave is in the Ein Gedi nature reserve in the Judean desert, which is impossible to enter without special equipment, including grippers and electronic devices, said the report.

The artifacts are dated back to the time of Rabbi Shimon Bar-Cochva, roughly 135 Common Era (mid-second century). They are currently at the Israel Museum for analysis.

Fifty years ago when the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered, scholars believed no more documents of the kind were in existence in the area.

Ten years ago, a number of documents were discovered south of West Bank city of Jericho.
