40 Children Injured in Road Collision in Johannesburg

A total of forty school children were injured and a truck driver had to be airlifted to the Johannesburg General hospital after the truck collided with a school bus in Germiston, southeast of Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

A total of forty school children were injured and a truck driver had to be airlifted to the Johannesburg General hospital after the truck collided with a school bus in Germiston, southeast of Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Superintendent Andy Pieke said the truck went through the wall of a building and the driver had to be cut out ofthe cabin. He was in a critical condition when he was airlifted tohospital.

Twenty-six of the school children who sustained serious injuries were taken to the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Benoni whilethe rest were taken to the Union hospital in Alberton with minor injuries.

The cause of the accident has not yet known.

Although South Africa has the best road system on the continent,about 10,000 people are killed and 150,000 injured in approximately 500,000 traffic accidents every year.
