Israeli warplanes Wednesday morning violated Lebanese airspace and broke sound barriers over several cities, local security sources said.

Israeli fighters flew over the capital of Beirut and the northern port city of Tripoli while blaring sound barriers. The sources said the overflights lasted several hours.

The warplanes invaded Lebanese airspace from the the border areain south Lebanon, where the resistance guerrilla group Hezbollah, or Party of God, fired rackets toward the incoming planes. But no target was hit.

Israel withdrew troops from south Lebanon in May 2000, but its violation of Lebanon's airspace has been frequently reported since October 2000, amid tensions between Hezbollah and Israeli army, which still holds the controversial Shebaa Farms.
