Towa Corporation, Japan's leading semiconductor encapsulation equipment maker, has set up a wholly-owned company in Shanghai, company sources confirmed Thursday.

Located in Zhangjiang, an emerging high-tech industrial park in the Pudong New District, the Towa (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. will focus on research, development and marketing activities and provide logistic support and technological counseling to its customers in China.

Towa's operation in Shanghai would help boost the integrated circuit industry and semiconductor encapsulation technologies in the region, said Sadahito Okuda, the company's president and chief operation officer.

The Shanghai branch, along with the Towa (Suzhou) Co. set up in Suzhou City in neighboring Jiangsu Province earlier this year, would enable the company to provide more advanced technologies and better services to Chinese customers, he added.

China's growing demand for computers, mobile phones and other household electric appliances in recent years has boosted the semiconductor industry, but the country still relies largely on imports due to its lack of state-of-the-art technologies and workmanship.

As the world's largest manufacturer of semiconductor encapsulation equipment and precision molds, Towa has grabbed a lion's share of the Chinese market through its cooperation with big name companies such as Motorola, Fujitsu, Toshiba and the China Huajing Group.
