The Chinese side will, as always, pay close attention to its good-neighborly friendship and cooperation with Japan in the new century.

Zeng Qinghong, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark in Beijing Friday afternoon at a meeting with Ikuo Hirayama, president of the Japan-China Friendship Association, and his party.

Zeng spoke highly of the Japanese friends' prolonged efforts and positive role in promoting bilateral friendly relations.

Noting this year is the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, Zeng cited a series of activities marking the occasion, notably a gathering in Beijing onSept. 22 which received more than 13,000 Japanese personages.

These activities have helped increase the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and created sound conditions for the further growth of bilateral relations, added Zeng.

Pointing to President Jiang Zemin's speech delivered at the September gathering, Zeng said it mapped out the general direction of bilateral friendship and cooperation.

He acknowledged that Sino-Japanese friendship enjoys a solid foundation and there is still much to do in regards to non-governmental friendly contacts.

Both sides should take this year as an opportunity, continue to follow the spirit of "learning from history and facing the future", and make concerted efforts to promote bilateral understanding, friendship and cooperation in various fields, as well as push for the further growth of bilateral relations, said Zeng.

He added that he hoped the Japanese side will carry forward the friendly tradition and actively promote bilateral exchanges so as to contribute still more to bilateral friendship from generation to generation.

Zeng also gave them an account on the success of the just-concluded 16th National Congress of the CPC.

Hirayama extended his congratulations on the Congress and his belief that China will achieve still more rapid and greater development.

The two peoples should, in the spirit of "learning from historyand facing the future", expand exchanges and cooperation and advance bilateral friendship even more, he said.

Hirayama also hoped for a cultural Silk Road between Asia and Europe, which will help develop China's western areas, for the economic growth of different countries, as well as for the safeguarding of regional and world peace.

The Japanese friends arrived in China Thursday for a visit at the invitation of the China-Japan Friendship Association.
