Chinese Leaders Greet New Pakistani Speaker, Prime Minister

Li Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, and Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji sent separate congratulatory messages, on Friday, to the newly elected speaker of Pakistan's National Assembly, Chaudhry Amir Hussain, and Prime Minister Mir ZafarullahKhan Jamali.

Li Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, and Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji sent separate congratulatory messages, on Friday, to the newly elected speaker of Pakistan's National Assembly, Chaudhry Amir Hussain, and Prime Minister Mir ZafarullahKhan Jamali.

China and Pakistan are neighboring countries enjoying a close friendship, and the two sides, which have enjoyed mutual understanding, mutual trust and supported each other, have developed an "all-weather" friendship by abiding by the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, said Li.

Parliaments of the two countries have maintained close contactsfor years, and made great contributions to promote the developmentof bilateral relations, he said.

Li also expressed belief that during the tenure of Hussain, thefriendly cooperative relations between the two countries and theirparliaments would enjoy further development.

In his message, Zhu Rongji said that since China and Pakistan established diplomatic relations 51 years ago, bilateral cooperation in various fields based on equality and mutual benefithas produced fruitful results.

He said that in major international and regional issues, China and Pakistan, by supporting and coordinating with each other, haveplayed key roles in maintaining their interests and the interests of other developing countries.

"I firmly believe that through concerted efforts, the comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and Pakistan will be further deepened and expanded," the Chinese premier said.
