EAPC Determines to Cooperate for New Challenges

Leaders of the 46 member states of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) announced in Prague on Friday their intention to strengthen cooperation, and to work together in facing new challenges including combating terrorism.

Leaders of the 46 member states of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) announced in Prague on Friday their intention to strengthen cooperation, and to work together in facing new challenges including combating terrorism.

At the meeting, held in the Congress Center of Prague, leaders of the 46 member states emphasized their joint commitment to strengthen and extend peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area. They stressed the importance of initiatives aimed at increasing the EAPC's contribution to fighting against terrorism in the new situation.

The council consists 19 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states and 27 East European and Central Asian nationswhich are seeking to join the alliance.

During the meeting, NATO Secretary-General George Robertson said NATO leaders discussed a "framework" for better cooperation against terrorism with other partner states.

"We have to look beyond traditional roles and infuse the whole process with new substance," he said.

United States President George W. Bush said he welcomed "partner countries that wish to draw closer to NATO", and insisted that "the declarations of these countries must be met with actions."

The communique approved at the meeting noted that the 46 countries discussed enhancing political and security related consultations, adopting a broader approach to security in EAPC andintensifying interaction between the EAPC countries at all appropriate levels and structures.

Participants in the meeting also "reaffirmed the commitment of the Euro-Atlantic community to peace, security and stability in the Balkans," the communique said.
