With China's foreign trade experiencing its biggest boom ever, Hong Kong should seize the opportunity to become one of the most efficient and profitable legal service centers in Asia, said Elsie Leung, Secretary for Justice of HK Special Administrative Region (SAR) Friday at Chengdu of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Leung led a 13-member entourage to Chengdu, the capital city ofsouthwest China's Sichuan province, to improve Hong Kong-interior cooperation with regard to legal services.

Leung told government officials in Sichuan that, in view of theprofound reform and opening-up in the trade and financial sectors, the interior has been experiencing a marked rise in foreign investment, which will make it more competitive as an expert-oriented manufacturing center.

Foreign firms dealing with the Chinese mainland will expect proper settlement of all economic and trade disputes, and Hong Kong has a competitive advantage as a potential "middleman," Leungsaid.

She briefed the local officials on HK's unique advantages, including its geographic proximity, languages, market, legal and cultural backgrounds.

HK has become an international arbitration center which can arbitrate cases in the interior areas or in any Member State of the "New York Pact".

Currently, Hong Kong has more than 5,000 locally-registered lawyers and over 600 foreign lawyers. And it has initiated cooperative legal service projects with 15 countries.
