The average per-capita gross domestic product of Shanghai will experience a dramatic increase once its suburban areas are fully developed, Vice-Mayor Feng Guoqin said Friday.

Addressing the Shanghai Global Industrial Exposition, Feng said that the next 5-10 years will be crucial for Shanghai's suburban development with regard to strengthening the city's international competitiveness.

Feng said the municipal government plans to set up a powerful civil service system within the 5,700-square-kilometer suburbs to support the further development of the city proper.

Meanwhile, four national industrial bases, nine municipal industrial zones and over 100 small economic zones will be built within the suburban area to transform it into the city's major "economic engine."

According to official forecast, this year's gross domestic product of the suburban area will comprise 40 percent of Shanghai's total and the industrial output value will rise to 27 percent.

To date, about one-tenth of the Fortune 500 have set up companies in the suburbs in Shanghai.

To attract more overseas investment, Fu said the municipal government has promised to grant national treatment to all overseas investors and to improve the local investment climate to help cut operational costs.
