A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Saturday called on Asian political parties to further enhance cooperation and jointly contribute to regional peace and development.

"For Asian political parties, it is an unshakable historical obligation to ensure lasting peace and stability, strive for economic growth and prosperity, and promote dialogue and cooperation among the countries in the region," Cai Wu, deputy head of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, said in his address to a meeting of Asian political parties.

The 2nd International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) here between Nov. 22 and Nov. 24 was hosted by Thailand's ruling Thai Rak Thai Party and attended by 230 representatives from 77 parties in the region.

To form a partnership among regional political parties in building Asia's future, Cai, representing the CPC at the conference, made a few suggestions.

"First, we should keep pace with the trend towards globalization and regional cooperation, and continue to push cooperation among Asian political parties towards the orientation of deepened and sustained development," he said.

Meanwhile, cooperation among parties should be based on full respect for the historical and cultural diversity as well as different modes for development in the region, said the official.

Moreover, "we should press ahead with the establishment of a just, new international political and economic order," he noted.

Cai said that he believed that political parties in the region have a unique role in promoting regional economic integration.

In addition, parties in the region need to advocate new security concepts and enable regional security cooperation to grow constantly, he said.

The CPC representative also stressed that at its recent 16th national congress, the CPC reiterated that despite changes of international situation, China will unswervingly uphold the independent foreign policy of peace.

"The purpose of our foreign policy is to safeguard world peace and promote common development and we are ready to work with the rest of the world to push forward the lofty cause of world peace and development," he said.

"Based on principles of independence, complete equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's affairs, we will further develop our exchange and cooperation with other political parties in various countries and regions," said the official.

At the three-day meeting, delegates are focusing on issues such as regional security, political culture, Asian dialogue, economic development modes, financial reform, environment protection and diversify of culture.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Philippine President Gloria Arroyo addressed the meeting.

The first ICAPP meet was held in the Philippines in September 2000, bringing together 150 participants from 43 Asian parties.
