The Jordanian authorities on Sunday slapped a curfew again in the southern town of Maan after a fresh gunfight that killed two people and wounded several others.

Reports reaching here in the evening said the clashes occurred earlier in the day following a quarrel between local residents and police stationed outside the mayor's offices.

No more details are available immediately yet.

This is the second time that police impose a curfew in Maan, a traditional stronghold for Islamic fundamentalists and a potential hot spot in the kingdom.

On Nov. 9, Maan residents clashed with security forces who stormed the town to search for armed gangsters accused of embarkingon illegal activities, including smuggling drugs and weapons.

Over 60 people were arrested and at least six others, including two policemen, died in the clashes followed by a week-long curfew.

The violence in Maan, the poorest province in the kingdom, this month also marked apparent discontent among local people with the poor economic condition in the country, where unemployment rate officially stands at over 13 percent while independent estimate putit at over 20 percent.
