The United States has secured an agreement with Iran to assist and return any US pilots downed over its territory in a possible US war with Iraq, CNN reported on Monday.

US government sources said the agreement was reached after two months of talks between officials from the two governments. The accord, however, is not believed to be formal, mainly because the governments have no direct ties.

Officials said the Iranians have agreed that if the US were to lose pilots or air crew over Iran, either due to mechanical failure or hostile fire from neighboring Iraq, they would render medical assistance to the US personnel and return them as quickly as possible.

Any aircraft capable of flying would also be returned. However, the situation could be complicated if aircraft were to crash on Iranian territory, officials said.

Iran would be likely to inspect any crash site and consequently could have access to ultra-sophisticated US military technology, they added.

The agreement is similar to arrangements made with Iran last year when US forces staged air strikes against the Taliban regime in neighboring Afghanistan.
