Several rockets slammed into the eastern edge of Kabul overnight, landing several miles from a base of the international peacekeepers, their spokesman said Tuesday.

Maj. Mike Edwards said he believed the peacekeepers were the target. Members of the International Security Assistance Force were scouring the hills on the edge of the city for clues as to who fired the rockets, he told reporters in Kabul.

Security in the Afghan capital, where 4,800 international peacekeepers are deployed, is tight following several small explosions and the occasional rocket attack that the government blames on remnants of the Taliban, or loyalists of renegade commander Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

The worst incident occurred Sept. 5 when a powerful car bomb exploded in a market killing 30 people and injuring scores more.

Since then several attempted bombings have been foiled and last week authorities said they arrested an Iraqi Kurd suspected of planning to assassinate either Afghan President Hamid Karzai or Defense Minister Mohammed Fahim.
