Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao Attends Opening Ceremony of APCAEM
Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao attended the opening of the headquarters of the Asian and Pacific Center for Agricultural Engineering and Machinery (APCAEM) of the United Nations on Tuesday in Beijing.

Wen said the APCAEM is the first China-based official UN organization, and the move of the center from Bangkok, Thailand to Beijing marks a step forward for cooperation between China and the UN, thanks to concerted efforts by all parties concerned.

He expressed his belief that more UN and other international organizations will set up their headquarters in China and said the Chinese government is ready to give support and provide work conditions for their operation.

Wen said the Beijing-based APCAEM will bring a positive impact by promoting Asia-Pacific cooperation in agricultural engineering and machinery, and boost regional agricultural development as a whole.

He also hoped the APCAEM would contribute to poverty-elimination and common progress in the region via coordinated efforts of members in research and development, capacity building and resource sharing.

Wen Jiabao and Kim Hak-Su, UN under-secretary and executive secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, jointly unveiled the APCAEM plaque.

Song Jian, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, handed Kim Hak-Su the key to the APCAEM office.

Jouni Backman, minister of environment of Finland, also delivered a speech on behalf of the Finnish government, which provided the first donation to the APCAEM.

The APCAEM, now with 12 members, covers a wide range of research areas, including agriculture, forestry, husbandry, cash crop production, fishery, as well as genetic engineering and agricultural information projects.
