Lebanese Defense Minister Khalil Hrawi has said that his country is very grateful to China's political and military support, Lebanese newspaper An Nahar reported on Tuesday.

Hrawi, who is currently on an official visit in China, held talks with his Chinese counterpart Chi Haotian and signed an agreement under which China will assist Lebanon to clear hundreds of thousands of land mines in south Lebanon, the paper said.

More than 300,000 mines were planted in south Lebanon by Israelitroops and their surrogates during Israel's 22-year-long occupation.

China's assistance will include providing 50 mine detectors and 100 protective jackets as well as sending mine experts and technicians to train the Lebanese army in using the equipment.

Hrawi, the first Lebanese defense minister to visit China since the establishment of Sino-Lebanese diplomatic relations in 1971, said Lebanon always appreciates China's position to stand by Lebanon in Middle East issues.

"Now we are pleased to see our cooperation expanding to military level," the minister added.

He praised China's support for just Arab causes, noting that the Arab world is counting on China's support to push forward the peace process in the region.
