China hopes that joint efforts from both China and Chile will encourage the further development of bilateral long-term, steady and reciprocal cooperative partnership.

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen made the remark while meeting with visiting Chilean Vice Foreign Minister Crisitian Barros in Beijing Tuesday.

Noting that Chile is an important country in Latin America, Qian said the two countries have cooperated well in such fields aspolitics, economics, trade, culture, and science and technology since they established diplomatic ties 32 years ago.

The cooperation has brought substantial benefits to the two peoples and is of positive significance in safeguarding world peace and promoting common development, he said.

He said the exchange of visits between heads of state of both countries last year increased bilateral political trust and expanded economic and trade cooperation.

Barros' current visit to China is successful and the two sides have signed a series of cooperative agreements, which advanced thedevelopment of bilateral relations, Qian said.

Praising China's great economic and social achievements in recent years, Barros said Chile and China are friends though far apart geographically.

China is Chile's third biggest trading partner and the two enjoy great potential for cooperation, he said.

Chile can be a reliable partner for China, said Barros, adding his belief that bilateral friendly and cooperative ties will continue to develop.

Barros arrived here on Nov. 24 on a working visit to China at the invitation of China's Foreign Ministry.
