China has always given high priority to humanitarian issues and has a long-standing cooperative relationship with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), President Jiang Zemin said Wednesday in Beijing.

Jiang, who is Honorary President of the China Red Cross Society (CRCS), made the comment during his meeting with ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger.

Extending a warm welcome to Kellenberger, Jiang said that Kellenberger's visit will contribute to the advancement of the friendly cooperative relationship between the Chinese government, the CRCS and the ICRC.

Referring to the ICRC as one of the world's most important humanitarian organizations and the recognized guardian of the Geneva Convention, he said the committee has done a great deal to protect the lives and the dignity of the victims of wars and armed conflicts.

Its accomplishments are recognized by the entire world, Jiang said.

Kellenberger said he appreciated the Chinese government's long-standing support for the ICRC, stressing that the ICRC values China's important role in the international Red Cross movement.

Peng Peiyun, CRCS president and vice-chairwoman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, also attended the meeting.

Kellenberger, the guest of the CRCS, arrived here on Tuesday for a four-day working visit. This is his first China visit since assuming the presidency in 2000.
